La Salut grew up on the outskirts of Gràcia around a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Health, built in 1864. Urban development began in the second half of the nineteenth century around the church of Nuestra Señora de la Salud, and the area's earliest activity was agricultural before it gradually became a residential summer district for the Barcelona bourgeoisie. A handful of old farmhouses, including Can Xipreret and Can Tusquets, still stand among the later housing. The neighbourhood's most notable landmark by far is Park Güell, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

For anything not available locally, Travessera de Gràcia and Gran de Gràcia are a short walk south.

Families in La Salut have access to public schooling within the neighbourhood itself. Escola Baldiri Reixac, a public school, sits inside the Park Güell grounds on Carrer Olot. Bus lines including 27, H6, V17, 87, 22, and 24 stop near Plaça de Lesseps, extending coverage across the neighbourhood's hillier streets. On-street parking is available but limited given the steep, narrow layout, so many residents rely on public transport or walking for daily trips to central Barcelona.

Community life in La Salut centres around its civic and neighbourhood associations rather than large cultural venues.
